Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon Headliner Rattle: Clips or Fabric Failure?
If your 2023–2026 Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon has a squeak or rattle near the factory sunroof, the headliner fabric may not be the problem.
General Motors Bulletin 26-NA-231 addresses a sunroof-area headliner rattle or squeak on certain 2023–2026 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks. According to GM’s dealer technical summary, the headlining trim-panel retainers may not provide proper retention, or a material-compatibility issue may allow movement and noise. GM directs technicians to install updated retainers and specifically advises against replacing the headliner for this condition. A rattle by itself should therefore not be diagnosed as failed foam-backed fabric. Hanging fabric, bubbling, or deteriorated foam indicates a separate upholstery problem.

Signs that the retainer clips may be the problem
These observations can help distinguish a mounting issue from fabric failure; they are not a substitute for diagnosis using GM’s service information:
- Squeaking or rattling near the sunroof opening
- Noise that becomes noticeable over bumps or rough roads
- A headliner panel that moves when gently pressed
- Fabric that remains attached smoothly to the board
- No deteriorated foam or loose material hanging overhead
Ask a Chevrolet or GMC technician to inspect the mounting hardware and consult the current bulletin for the correct updated parts and installation procedure.
This is different from traditional headliner-fabric failure.
Signs that the headliner fabric has failed
Replacement fabric may be needed when you see:
- Fabric hanging or sagging away from the headliner board
- Bubbles, wrinkles or loose areas across the ceiling
- Yellow or orange foam dust behind the material
- Fabric separating around the dome light or overhead console
- Material that will not remain attached after being pressed upward
These symptoms usually indicate that the original foam backing has deteriorated. Once that foam breaks down, spraying adhesive through the existing fabric generally produces only a temporary and uneven repair.
A proper repair requires removing the old material and deteriorated foam before installing new foam-backed headliner fabric.
Important adhesive warning
Headliner Magic high-temperature spray adhesive is designed to bond replacement foam-backed fabric to a properly cleaned headliner board.
It is not a substitute for the mounting hardware or any structural bonding materials required by the vehicle manufacturer. Follow current GM service information for retainer or bracket repairs; this article does not specify the adhesive or procedure for those repairs.
Quick diagnostic guide

Frequently asked questions
Will spraying adhesive near the sunroof stop the rattle?
Not if the noise is caused by loose retainers or a detached structural bracket. Spray adhesive is intended for replacement fabric, not structural mounting points.
